Mumbai may get 3 desalination plants

Mumbai and its suburbs might get three desalination plants if the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has its way. There are plans afoot for a plant each at Vasai-Virar, Mira-Bhayandar and in the city. MMRDA commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad said they are aiming for 500 million litres a day and detailed project reports would be ready in a few months. The state government started pushing the desalination plant idea after plans for one were announced in Chennai. There, the plant is expected to help the city tide over a water shortage, which assumes serious proportions every year.
According to Gaikwad, the government was thinking along these lines to ensure that there was a continuous supply of water in case of problems with the monsoon in the future. It has to consider situations
arising out of the failure of monsoon and its impact on the city’s functioning, he added. MMRDA officials said the Mumbai model will be similar to the Chennai one. The chief minister was keen on taking up the project as a long-term solution to the water problem, they added. “We are planning a global city, which will attract investment from across the globe. So we need to get our act together and solve this problem,’’ the officials added.
The finer details of the project are still to be worked out. Initially, only one plant will be built and the two others will come up later to boost water supply.
