Maya woos farmers

Under fire for her government’s handling of farmer agitations in UP, chief minister Mayawati on Thursday announced a land acquisition policy under which the government will play the role of a facilitator. Private companies needing land for projects will have to buy it directly from farmers through mutual agreement. No land acquisition will be done in a village where consent of 70% inhabitants has not been obtained, Mayawati announced after a kisan panchayat. The new policy comes into effect immediately.
