Of Mango people in a Banana Republic....

Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra deleted his Facebook account after a fracas over his status message on the social networking site.
Vadra’s status message — “Mango people in a banana republic” — was a dig at IAC members Arvind Kejriwal and senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who levelled allegations of corruption against him.
Before deleting his account, Vadra reportedly wrote on his page, “Obviously, it seems I have people on my Facebook account who do not have a sense of humour. Everything I write becomes news and further debates on television?? I have decided to delete my account.”
Earlier in the day, IAC member Kumar Vishwas demanded an apology over the status message, saying it was an insult to the nation. “Today Robert Vadra has written ‘mango people in banana republic’ on his Facebook page… it is OK to call us mango people or aam aadmi but referring to the country as a banana republic is shameful,” Vishwas said.
He added that Vadra’s mother-in-law was ruling the country and would be answerable as to why India was being called a banana republic.

Arvind Kejriwal has attacked BJP leader Shanta Kumar for asking the anticorruption activists to include Priyanka Vadra’s property in Himachal Pradesh in their fight, saying the party-led state government could not shrug away responsibility and should make the details public.
Kumar had written to the activists on Sunday asking them to include Priyanka, two days after Kejriwal and lawyer Prashant Bhushan had alleged that her husband Robert Vadra had business links with DLF and the realty major was benefited by this.
In the letter, the former Himachal chief minister supported Kejriwal in his anti-graft campaign and said, “Priyanka Vadra’s family has a property in Shimla. I don’t have full information about this but it has a value of crores of rupees. You should add this to your list. The whole country is with you in your fight.”
Reacting to the letter, the Kejriwal-led India Against Corruption said in a statement that the BJP was ruling the state and it would be easy for Kumar to find out the truth whether Priyanka owned property in the state or not.
“Shanta Kumar is saying he does not have information. We don’t understand this. He can find this out very fast as his party is in power. We appeal to Shanta Kumar and chief minister P K Dhumal that they tell the public whether Priyanka has any property in Shimla as is alleged.
“We also know that no outsider can buy property in Himachal without the state government’s permission. If this is true, when was Priyanka Vadra given permission to buy property in the state and which government gave it?” the statement said. In 2007, the then Congress government had given Priyanka permission to purchase land in Charabra, on the outskirts of Shimla, and a house is under construction at the site.
On Kumar’s remarks that a handful of people were looting wealth, the IAC statement said, “We want to bring their attention to the fact that BJP is also involved in this loot as any other party is. The same story is coming out in other states also where BJP is in power.” Kejriwal later tweeted, “DLF granted favours to Robert Vadra. What favours did Haryana govt grant DLF? How is DLF reply a bunch of lies?”

Two days after Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal alleged that realty major DLF gave properties to Robert Vadra at grossly undervalued rates, Left parties have demanded a probe into the dealings of the companies. The CPM politburo noted that a number of charges were levelled about “business dealings of companies promoted by Robert Vadra” and that they “should be investigated by relevant authorities”.
Senior CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said, “The best way to deal is to have a judicial probe. I condemn what Mr Chidambaram said about no probe required. One after another CAG reports have indicted the government. The guilty should be brought to book.”
