Fishermen and activists protesting against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant laid a siege to it from the sea by anchoring their boats about 500 metres off the project site.
The agitation went off peacefully with the protesters calling off the demonstration by 4pm and the boats returning to the shore in the evening. Tight security arrangements were made with 5,000 security personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force, Rapid Action Force and the District Armed Reserved Police being deployed near the plant. Three boats from the coastal security group monitored the sea front while coast guard vessels were anchored a little away from the protest site. Barbed wire fences had been put up at places to prevent fishermen from invading the plant.
The siege started at around 9.30am with People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) co-ordinator S P Udayakumar along with other activists heading to the siege site in a fibre boat. About 800 boats participated in the protest. Later in the evening, Udayakumar said fishermen from three districts -- Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin — participated in the protest.
