State-run gas utility GAIL raised the bar in the liquid gas business by starting the 5-million tonne a year import facility of the Dabhol power plant and said it was weighing the option of getting into shipping to capitalize on its longterm supply tie-ups from the US and Spain.
Announcing the commissioning of the plant, company chairman B C Tripathi said GAIL aims to double the capacity of the terminal to 10 million tonnes per annum, or equal to Petronet’s Dahej terminal in Gujarat, in four years at an investment of Rs 3,000 crore.
Tripathi said GAIL is looking at either sourcing seven LNG (liquid gas) shipping vessels on long-term charter hire or outright purchase.
