JNPT drops MTHL realignment demand

The last hurdle in the way of the 22-km trans-harbour link has been removed, with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust dropping its demand for realignment of the ambitious Rs 9,360 crore sea link.
The nation’s largest container port will issue an NOC to the government to go ahead with the trans-harbour link as per the planned alignment, said Milind Deora, minister of state for shipping.
The JNPT had earlier asked the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority to increase the height of a short stretch of the project, which was coming in the way of the port’s plan of building a fifth terminal.
The much-delayed Mumbai Trans-harbour Link is a 22-km freeway which will connect Navi Mumbai to the island city.
In another development, the Haji Ali-Worli sea link has inched closer to execution with deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar asking Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation to bring the proposal before the cabinet subcommittee of infrastructure within a month for clearance.
Pawar also asked finance department secretary Sudhir Srivastava to finalise its decision on the MSRDC proposal to build the sea link on its own, by raising Rs.1,392 crore. The agency wants state support agreement to raise the money. Sources said Pawar, who is also finance minister will push for the project.
