M-Governance in Karnataka

Some of the government services are available at your fingertips now. Citizens can pay their bills, tax and fines through their mobile phone.
The Karnataka government has launched an integrated mobile-enabled service delivery system (Mobile governance or M-governance). The pilot project enables citizens to pay their electricity, water and mobile bills, pay property tax, access Sakala services and traffic fines via mobile.
‘‘It is hassle-free, saves a lot of time and can be accessed from all mobile phone sets,’’' chief minister Jagadish Shettar said after launching the service.
The advantage of the system is that there is no need to remember multiple phone numbers to access different services. To access the service, voice dial 8088887766. It will give instructions in Kannada as well as in English about how to make use of the services. For the interface, dial *505*807# or login to https://mobile.karnataka.gov.in
To make payments, citizens can use their credit card, bank account using IMPS (Interbank mobile payment service) or mRupee (a semiclosed wallet-based financial instrument) offered by Tata Teleservices.
Consumers can track their Sakala applications and can apply for a few Sakala services on phone for which no documents are required. As many as 151 services have been included for status enquiry.
All helplines can be availed at one place and traffic alerts can be subscribed.
Onmobile has provided the mobile-service-delivery gateway free of cost to the government for the first phase of the project.
Shettar said he has directed other government departments to adopt mobile governance.
