The Union government has said it will give immediate approval to the Pune metro project and make subsequent allocation of funds in the budget. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been told to prepare a detailed project report on mono rail.
Pune MPs, corporators and civic officials met Union Urban Development minister Kamal Nath and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar in New Delhi on Thursday. It was emphasized that the PMC should set up a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for executing the metro project and that it should work in tandem with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). It was also stressed that a deadline be set for completion of the project.
“Kamal Nath asked the PMC to take steps to establish a special purpose vehicle and also asked to prepare the detailed project report for the mono rail. He asked for integration of metro, mono rail and BRTS project in the city,” said mayor Vaishali Bankar. Bankar, who was present for the meeting, said that discussions were “positive” and actual work on metro project is likely to start within six months. Pimpri Chinchwad mayor Mohini Lande said the Centre has asked the PMC and the PCMC to work in tandem.
In June last year, the state cabinet had approved the 14.925-km elevated metro rail route from Vanaz to Ramwadi. The cabinet also decided to form the Pune Metro Rail Corporation to implement the project, which is to be completed in the next five years.
The DMRC’s final draft report in 2009 estimated that the Pune metro project could be completed at a cost of Rs 8,401 crore (first corridor) and Rs 9,534 crore (second corridor). The cost for the Vanaz-Ramwadi route was expected to be Rs 2,593 crore.
