An Olive Ridley turtle washed ashore at Foreshore Estate in Chennai. This year, at least 50 dead turtles washed ashore in the 15-km stretch between Neelankarai in the south and Napiers Bridge in the north. Olive Ridleys, protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, also face threats from trawlers, as they get caught in their fishing nets. The fishermen either cut their flippers to untangle them from the nets or the turtles drown as a result of being submerged in water for a long time. Some of the turtles that drown are washed ashore
