Residents of nine villages in Sangli district of western Maharashtra have come together to rejuvenate the Agrani river, that flows near their villages. The project is planned by non-governmental organization Jal Biradari and local residents would be teaming up with it to overcome the problem of water scarcity.
Suneel Joshi of Jal Biradari said, “There was hardly any water in the river due to various reasons such as irregularity of rain and delayed monsoon, unchecked extraction of groundwater and little effort to rejuvenate water sources. The villagers therefore realized that there was no alternative to secure a sustainable water source other than rejuvenating the river.”
Joshi said that Agrani river is a tributary of Krishna and originates from the plateau of Adsarvadi village located in Khanapur taluka of Sangli district. The river flows from Khanapur, Tasgaon, Kavthemahankal talukas and joins Krishna river at Athani village.
He said, the actual work will start on Gudi Padwa and will comprise river cleaning and dredging. The plan for complete rejuvenation of the river will be developed further. The plan will also include designing crop pattern and improving groundwater conservation. The entire project will be implemented in a span of around 3 to 5 years. The project will benefit about 20,000 residents and about 10,000 cattle in nine villages. Besides it will help to provide irrigation facilities for about 4,500 hectare land.
