Safdarjung Hospital set for revamp

Safdarjung hospital, one of the country’s oldest and largest medical institutions run by the Central government, is all set for a revamp.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, Government of India has approved Rs.1,332 crore for phase-I of the redevelopment of the hospital which will include building an 807-bed super-specialty cum paid ward block and 500-bed emergency block. The estimated implementation time of the project, official sources said, is 47 months.“The super-specialty-cum-paid ward block will cater only to cardio vascular thoracic science, cardiology, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, neurosurgery, nephrology, neurology etc. This block will have its own diagnostic and investigation facilities, some of which are proposed to be provided through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode,” stated a release issued by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. It also said, “The Emergency block will cater primarily to orthopedics, neurosurgery and general surgery and also to emergency cases. Diagnostic and investigation facilities will be provided by the hospital directly.” Dr Jagdish Prasad, director general of health services, said the decision will help in reducing the burden off All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and provide better quality services to thousands of needy patients seeking treatment. “The super-specialty departments of AIIMS, like neurosurgery and cardiac surgery, have waiting period of one month to even a year,” Prasad said.
