Dharavi revamp update

The Dharavi revamp scheme continues to gain momentum. The Dharavi Redevelopment Authority (DRA) has issued a public notice to the residents of Sector 5, which is currently being redeveloped by Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), to check their eligibility status.
The notice gives slum dwellers one month’s time to raise their objections. No one will be entertained after the deadline.
According to a senior official of the DRA, they have published a provisional list of the slum dwellers. “Slum dwellers who have been residing since before the year 2000 should inform us with proof of their residence,” said the official. “We have also sought information of any change in ownership of the slum if it has been sold.” According to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, Sector 5 comprises 62 hectares and houses 9,300 families.
This provisional list has been prepared based on a biometric survey conducted by the NGO Mashal. However, according to Mashal, more than 31% of the residents in this area were found to be ineligible for this scheme. Two years back, the NGO had said that more than 2,900 of the total 9,300 tenements have changed hands in this sector.
However, Dharavi-based resident organisations have condemned the notice. “The DRP should conduct a fresh survey so that no is left out of the redevelopment process. Such short term plans will only result in chaos,” said Raju Kode, convener, Dharavi Nagrik Manch.
Initiated in 2004, the Dharavi revamp is one of the state government’s biggest projects. It aims to turn India’s largest slum into a plush township. The initial plan of private bidding for all the sectors was postponed twice, and in 2010, sector 5 was handed over to MHADA, which has now started construction.
