BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi made yet another faux pas, saying women in Jammu and Kashmir did not enjoy the same rights as men. And to make the point, he alluded to none other than CM Omar Abdullah himself.
Saying Article 370, giving special status to the state, had not been beneficial, he brought up the issue of a gender divide. “If Omar Abdullah marries outside Kashmir, his rights as a citizen remain. But his sister Sara loses the right because she has married outside the state.” He seemed unaware that the PDP government in 2005 passed a law enabling Kashmiri women, who marry a non-state subject, to inherit and possess property in the state and continue to be a J and K citizen.
He said the state government was corrupt and J and K was the only state in the country that did not have Prevention of Corruption Act.
Earlier, BJP president Rajnath Singh said his party would raise the issue of border agreement with China in Parliament.
A livid Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah, reacting to Narendra Modi’s comment on Kashmiri women losing their right to property upon marrying outside the state, sent out tweets pointing out errors in the BJP PM candidate’s speech late on Sunday. “He (Modi) very conveniently used me and my sister as examples to illustrate a point that has no bearing on truth. Either he lies or is ill informed,” Omar tweeted after Modi’s rally on Sunday.
Excited to join Mumbai rally on Sunday
