Hours before announcement of the Lok Sabha election dates, former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit was named governor of Kerala. She replaces Nikhil Kumar, who has held the post since March 2013.
Dikshit’s appointment came after Kumar stepped down amid speculation that he may contest the Lok Sabha poll from Bihar.
For Dikshit, the new assignment ends her political exile following a humiliating defeat in the recent assembly polls in Delhi. Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party debuted with 28 seats, reducing the Congress tally to just 8 seats. Dikshit was herself defeated by Kejriwal in her assembly constituency.
