The Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has moved a step closer to getting its new terminal building (T-2) and second runway. Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) will begin civil works on both by the end of this year.
The airport will hold a design competition for the T-2 building to pick a contemporary, efficient design. The consortium recently expanded the existing terminal (T-1).
“With the expansion of T-1, we have the capacity to accommodate 20 million passengers per annum (up from 12 million earlier). Our passenger traffic in 2013-14 was 12.86 million, and we are expecting it to touch 13.8 million by the end of 2014-15. In the next four years, we estimate the traffic to cross 20 million. We will then need the new runway and terminal,” BIAL senior director (finance and support service) B Bhaskar said.
The process to invite requests for proposal for the design competition has been initiated. All permissions for the second runway will be obtained before the civil works begin, he said.
A committee comprising representatives from Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), the Indian Air Force and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, among other organizations, has met to discuss the design of KIA’s T-2.
“A final decision will come by the end of this year and full-fledged work on the runway and terminal will begin in the last quarter of this year,” BIAL senior director (finance and support service) B Bhaskar said.
At present, the air traffic movement (ATM) per annum stands at approximately 1,20,000, while KIA has the capacity to handle 1,70,000. “If the passenger traffic crosses 20 million, then the ATM requirement will be roughly 3,50,000. The new runway and terminal will be able to accommodate that,” Bhaskar said. The new terminal will take the overall capacity of the airport to 55 million passengers per annum.
