The Dragon and the Elephant

China hopes that it can link its “Silk Road“ initiative with India's “Spice Route“ and “Mausam“ projects as part of China-India cooperation.
Le Yucheng, China's ambassador to India, on the occasion of the Chinese lunar new year, said that China's “One road, One belt“ initiatives can be linked with India's “Spice Route“ and “Mausam“ projects, thus forming a new starting point and a new bright spot in China-India cooperation.“
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to visit Beijing this summer, around May or June, Le Yu cheng said China was looking forward to “bumper harvest“ with an elephant dragon tango. “China is likened to a dragon, and India is likened to an elephant. The dragon is a totem of the Chinese nation, it is dynamic, peaceful, docile, and implies luck and success. The elephant is loved by Indians, is charmingly naive, walks with steady gait and symbolizes auspiciousness and peace,“ he said.
Describing the Road and Belt initiatives, the envoy said China has made “significant headway“ in putting the plans together.
He said more than 50 countries along the “Belt“ and “Road“ have supported their initiatives. “A set of programmes involving building infrastructure, setting up of industries and boosting people to people contacts have already been started. The Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), with 26 prospective founding member countries and the “Silk Road Fund“ of $40 billion, will provide financial services and support to these initiatives,“ he said. At the BRICS summit in Fortaleza, Brazil, Chinese president Xi Jinping, in his first meeting with Modi, offered to make India one of the founder members of the AIIB, which would be a precursor to India joining the initiative.
India's silence on joining the “Belt“ and “Road“ initiatives was an unspoken dampener on Xi Jinping's visit to India in September last year.
