Advani seeks fixed tenure for House

BJP’s PM candidate L K Advani sought a fixed term for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, and wanted polls in February. “I suggest that political parties and the EC should think over whether we can change the Constitution for a fixed tenure for the LS and assemblies,’’ the 81-year-old leader said after casting his vote in Ahmedabad. “We are following the UK pattern which does not suit us and we should change it,’’ he said. Pointing out difficulties being faced during summers, Advani said, “Polling percentage dips during the summer and, therefore, elections should be held in February.’’ He also said that voting should be made compulsory. BJP poll strategist Arun Jaitley has ruled out supporting a Third Front government in the event of the NDA failing to cobble up a majority, stating the “nucleus of any non-Congress government has to be the BJP or the NDA’’.
