India’s largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp will invest Rs 1,100 crore to set up a 12 lakh units-per-annum plant in Halol, where American auto major General Motors already has a manufacturing unit. The company said it will also set up a new manufacturing facility in Rajasthan apart from an R&D centre.
The plant in Gujarat would be commissioned by the second quarter of 2013-14. At present, the company produces 70 lakh units annually from its three manufacturing plants at Dharuhera and Gurgaon in Haryana, and Haridwar in Uttarakhand. The company is learnt to have identified 300 acres of land near the GM car plant. Hero will set up the factory in two phases. Once fully operational, it will have a capacity to roll out up to two million vehicles a year.
