SC appoints SIT on black money

The Supreme Court stunned the government by slamming its efforts to track black money and taking over the charge of investigation into the issue by appointing a Special Investigation Team under retired SC judge Justice B P Jeevan Reddy. A bench of Justices Sudershan Reddy and S S Nijjar appointed another retired SC judge, Justice M B Shah, who had ordered the registration of an FIR against UP CM Mayawati in the Taj Heritage Corridor scam, as the vice-chairman of the SIT which will report exclusively to the court. The order marks a vote of no-confidence in the government’s efforts to track unaccounted wealth within the country and came with a chastisement which can strengthen the government’s critics and fuel suspicion about its sincerity in unearthing black money. “The unaccounted monies held abroad are massive. The named individuals were present in the country. Yet, for unknown reasons, the investigations into the matter proceeded at a laggardly pace,” said Justice Reddy, who wrote the order.
