Sadananda Gowda is Karnataka CM

Around 2.50pm on Wednesday, D V Sadananda Gowda, backed by B S Yeddyurappa, was elected leader by BJP’s legislators, reaffirming the former CM’s clout in the party. The 58-year-old MP from Udupi-Chikmagalur will be sworn in as Karnataka’s 26th chief minister at 4.30pm on Thursday. Camp Yeddyurappa’s victory over rival Jagadish Shettar’s camp, backed by BJP’s national secretary Ananth Kumar, comes at a time when the governor has permitted the Lokayukta to prosecute the outgoing CM for corruption in a mining scam. In Wednesday’s secret ballot, held at a hotel barely 200m from Raj Bhavan, Gowda is said to have polled 63 votes to Shettar’s 55. Of 119 BJP MLAs, 117 voted. Thanking Yeddyurappa for his victory, the new chief minister said his predecessor had done a commendable job and he would only carry it forward. “Yeddyurappa has laid a strong foundation for all-round development of the state,” Gowda said.
