Government mulls new tenancy act

The government has prepared a draft model for a new tenancy law which proposes that rent should be fixed by mutual agreement between landlord and tenant for a stipulated lease period. The Residential Tenancy Act, 2011, which aims to promote rental housing in line with the national urban housing and habitat policy, also proposes to establish a framework for regulation of residential tenancy matters, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday. “The tenancy matters also seek to balance the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants, including the process of fast adjudication for resolution of disputes,” said minister of housing and poverty alleviation Kumari Selja. Selja said the draft tenancy act has been circulated to the state governments for comments and their response is awaited.
