MUTP III

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has approved implementation of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP–III) that envisages development of a corridor between Panvel and Virar, a fast corridor on the Harbour line between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Panvel, augmentation of lines on some routes and extension of Harbour services to Borivli. The board of directors meeting chaired by T C Benjamin, principal secretary, urban development department of Maharashtra, approved the concept plan of MUTP–III worth Rs 52,000 crore on Thursday. The plan is a first step towards implementation of MUTP-III. An official said, “It will be sent to the state government and the railways, which will both decide on execution of the projects in phases, depending on priority.” An MRVC official said, “The deadline for MUTP-II is 2014. Planning for MUTP-III has to start now as the state government and railways will deliberate on the project in detail before granting approval. By the time MUTP-II gets over, we can begin work on projects identified under MUTP-III.” The implementation of MUTP-III is likely to spur growth in areas in the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR). The concept plan identifies eight projects that include the building of the fifth and sixth corridors, quadrupling of lines on some sections and extension of harbour line services. “The building of additional lines along existing tracks will help us segregate Mail/Express and goods train traffic, helping us create an exclusive corridor for suburban traffic. It will help add new and fast services,” the official added. Benjamin said, “Top on the priority list is the suburban corridor in the Virar-Vasai Road-Diva-Panvel section, the fast corridor on the Harbour line between CST and the proposed international airport in Navi Mumbai, both of which have received in principle approval from the state government.” The Virar-Vasai Road-Diva-Panvel section will provide an impetus to the development of a new line, which will ease congestion on the main line. Rakesh Saksena, MRVC managing director, said, “Rail India Technical and Engineering Services (RITES) will be appointed as consultants to undertake a detailed feasibility study for both projects at a cost of Rs 10 crore. It is expected to take at least 12 months to complete the survey to identify the proposed alignment of the projects.”
