Of Bharuch and Ankleshwar

The twin townships of Bharuch and Ankleshwar took a step towards fusion as one city with the formation of the much-awaited Bharuch Ankleshwar Urban Development Authority (Bauda). The combined population of the two townships and the 94 surrounding villages is 3.6 lakh (of which 1.4 lakh are migrants) and the projected population by 2025 by is 8 lakh. The two industrial townships, 8 km apart, are separated by the Narmada and have their own nagarpalikas. The two local civic bodies had their own urban development authorities which will now be dissolved. The 58 villages of Bharuch taluka and 36 villages of Ankleshwar taluka, including Bharuch and Ankleshwar cities, will now be under the jurisdiction of Bauda. Observers say that it may take a year or so before the two nagarpalikas are merged into one municipal corporation. The twin townships are strategically located between Vadodara (80 km to the north) and Surat (60 km to the south). They are also the chemical hub on the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor.
