With the Prime Minister giving the Rs 1.20 lakh crore Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragod high-speed rail corridor the ‘in principle nod’, the land acquisition work for the project will soon begin.
“The PM’s assurance is a major breakthrough. We have already started the preliminary work for acquiring land, and it will now be speeded up. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will finalize the detailed project report (DPR) only by December. But we will proceed with the land acquisition proceedings before getting the DPR,” T Balakrishnan, chairman and managing director, High-speed Rail Corporation said. He said for most part of the route, land would have to be acquired only in the ‘right of use’ mode. Land owners will not have to fully part with their land as trains will be passing through elevated lines in most areas.
Balakrishnan said he made a project presentation before the officials of the Department of Economic Affairs and the Adviser to Prime Minister, Pulok Chatterjee, in New Delhi on Monday. “They were convinced about the economic and financial viability of the project,” he said.
Balakrishnan said talks for financial support for the project with various agencies, including JAICA, were in advanced stages.

If the alignment survey for HSRC being conducted in my village is any indication, HSRC is going to a huge eviction project. Alignment survey of the passage is being conducted within a span of 110 meters. Thousands of houses and other buildings will be destroyed. People have already opposed and obstructed the survey in residential areas in Kottayam, Ernanakulam and Alappuzha districts. The project will divide a locality and cause irreparable damages to environment. Also the project will be a drag on the finances of the State due to huge expenditure involved. Is such a mega project desirable in a land deficient state like Kerala?
