MUTP III snippets

Under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) III, the Railways is keen to start work on the CST-Panvel elevated fast air-conditioned rail corridor, a third and fourth line on the Virar-Dahanu stretch and a Vasai-Virar-Panvel suburban corridor. Together, they are expected to cost Rs.22,500 crore.
If the project is implemented, commuters travelling between CST and Panvel on the new elevated corridor could reach their destinations in double time, all the while seated comfortably in an air-conditioned compartment.
The Vasai-Virar-Panvel corridor will fall under the state’s burgeoning plans to increase connectivity between Mumbai and the fast-growing Navi Mumbai. The corridor is planned as a 70 km slow suburban line parallel to the existing one, which will have 25 stations and will cost Rs.6,000 crore. It will not only reduce the burden on the city’s suburban locals, but also fuel urban growth in the Thane and Raigad districts.
The feasibility reports for the projects have been completed and will be put up on the MRVC website for suggestions once the projects are sanctioned in the budget.
The corporation has also proposed to construct a third and fourth line between Virar and Dahanu. The Western Railway (WR) had proposed to extend the Churchgate-Virar suburban route to Dahanu by March end in the 2012-13 railway budget.
The third key project will be the CST-Panvel elevated fast corridor. The 55-km-long route will be elevated between CST and Mankhrud, and run at ground level thereafter. The project cost, including the construction of the stations and purchase of coaches will be about Rs.13,000 crore.
