UP’s Kalanamak rice gets GI tag


Known for its aroma and distinct taste, Kalanamak has now been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
The rice variety derives its name from black husk (kala) and a mild salty taste (namak)
Kalanamak is among the most aromatic rice varieties in India. Soft and easily digestible, it has a long shelf life
History of its cultivation dates back to 600BC. It is grown in Siddharthanagar, Mau, Azamgarh and Sant Kabir Nagar districts of Uttar Pradesh
