Doordarshan planning DTT

Doordarshan is planning to install Digital Terrestrial Transmission (DTT) in Gujarat, if its approved by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. This form of transmission has been started on a pilot basis in all the four metros — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai — which is the first of its kind in the country.Elaborating on the technology, Duhan said: “Earlier, viewers could receive only one channel in their antenna; now, with DTT, the carriers in the system will be able to transmit nearly five channels of Doordarshan through the antenna.” DTT will be a digitised version of transmission, where five Doordarshan channels will be captured by the antenna. He added: “A set top box will be installed at the television sets. This box will be able to convert the frequency in the digital form, thereby transmitting five channels to the television.” This system does not exist with any other private channels in India, he said. “In Gujarat, the project is in pipeline at Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, Bhuj and Ahmedabad. However, Doordarshan is waiting for the go-ahead of the Centre,” Duhan added. The present cost of the system is around Rs 700, which is expected to decrease after it is installed in all the states in the country.
