JNNURM is 3

JNNURM is 3 years old. This program will hopefully change the face of many cities. Aiming to develop satellite towns in a planned way, government is finalising a blueprint to include these towns under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme.
“There are 97 satellite towns and planning commission has earmarked Rs 500 crore for the development of these towns, but we have sought more funds to take up development work in these areas,” said Urban Development Secretary M Ramachandran. At present 63 cities are covered under JNNURM across the country.
Launched in 2005, the seven-year project has so far 365 approved schemes being implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 35,801.75 crore. A number of initiatives including credit rating of urban local bodies, bench marking of urban services, launch of urban sanitation policy and public private partnership have been launched to sustain JNNURM activities, he said. Urban development ministry is organising a three-day meet and exhibition on urban mobility and JNNURM on December 3 in the capital. The aim of the meet is to bring all technology and service providers from India and abroad in the related fields on one platform to exchange ideas and benefit from the experience, Ramachandran said.
