Gsat-5 prime

India’s latest 2,400 kg communication satellite — Gsat-5 prime — designed to argument telecom and TV services will be launched on December 20. Isro chief spokesperson S Satish said that a 49-metre tall three-stage geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) will carry the satellite, which has a 12-year mission life. ‘‘There will be a 90-minute launch window — the flight can be launched till 5.30 pm on December 20,’’ he said. The mission’s readiness review was held in Sriharikota on Friday last. Gsat-5, which will replace the aging Insat-2E satellite, has been configured as an exclusive Cband communication satellite and equipped with 12C-band transponders and six extended C-band transponders. The C-band’s primary role is to help in long-distance radio telecommunication. The satellite will have a wider coverage in uplink and downlink over Asia, Africa and eastern Europe as well as zonal coverage.
