Pune's BDP snippets

Bio Diversity Park (BDP) areas may see an increase of about a hectare after a comprehensive survey , following a nod from the general body of the Pune Municipal Corporation. A proposal tabled before the general body stated that a committee will be set up to prepare the draft report. Earlier, leading consultancy firms C-DAC and Monarch had submitted two survey reports. CDAC's survey used satellite images and aerial photography while the Monarch survey focused on the ground study .
“The final BDP limits should have been drafted using both the reports, but only the CDAC report was used. If the PMC wants an accurate picture, it should consider both reports,“ the proposal stated.
“BDP has different zones. After the comprehensive reports, the areas under BDP in different zones will change.Out of that, areas in some zones will reduce while in other zones, area will added. On an average, a total of 1 hectare will increase,“ said Anniruddha Pawaskar, executive engineer of DP cell, while speaking at the General Body meeting. He said that proposed BDP in Pune includes 978 hectares of land. It will increase to 979 hectares after the comprehensive survey .
Much of the project's area lies in the 23 merged villages on the fringes of Pune. When they were brought into the PMC's fold in 1996, the proposed development plan had recommended that 1,600 hectares in these fringe areas be reserved for BDP , which would function as green lungs for a rapidly expanding city .
Pune is approaching the four-million people mark and the current requirement of area under forest to sequester carbon emissions, absorb dust and other noxious gases from the atmosphere is 4,800 hectares.Considering an estimated increase in the population of Pune reaching seven million by 2020, this requirement will increase to 8,400 hectares.
The BDP reservation on the hills in 23 villages and along water bodies will meet 34.29% of the current need. Its implementation will substantially reduce the city's carbon footprint.
