PM to flag off 1st train to Valley

More than hundred years after Kashmir was promised a rail link, the much-delayed dream is finally going to fructify on Saturday as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh flags off the first train connecting Srinagar with South Kashmir district of Anantnag. Official sources said Prime Minister will flag off the first train from Srinagar to Rajvansher in Anantnag. The Prime Minister will board DMU (diesel multiple unit) train from Srinagar station as a symbolic gesture, the sources said. Though it’s a short distance between the two stations, it will be for the first time that Kashmiris will see a train running. The inauguration is a part of the plan to connect Baramulla (north Kashmir) to Qazigund (south Kashmir). However, connecting the Valley with the rest of the country still remains a distant dream. Northern Railways on Wednesday conducted final trial run of the DMU train between Ompora in Budgam district to Rajvansher.
