Mumbai's Oyster Rock to get International Cruise Terminal

The site for the world-class International Cruise Terminal (ICT) in Mumbai has been finalised. The ambitious project of the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) will come up at Oyster Rock.
MbPT finalised the site on the recommendation of the consultants appointed by it.
Zebec Marine Consultants (India) Services Pvt Ltd, in consortium with Dermello Ajamali and Partners, Florida, USA — which set up cruise terminals at places like New York and St Petersburg— submitted the recommendations recently. “The site has been finalised at Oyster Rock (south of Apollo Bunder, near Sassoon Dock),” a senior port official said. “We are in the process of inviting expression of interest by the December-end.” MbPT intends to establish Mumbai as a global travel and leisure destination through the ICT, he said, adding that visits of cruise vessels and passenger craft would put Mumbai on the cruise itineraries of global cruise liners and tourists.
According to the report of the consultants, the ICT would cost an estimated Rs 1,844 crore. It would be constructed on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis, with the private operator investing Rs 1,544 crore and MbPT putting in Rs 300 crore. MbPT participation would be in vital aspects like dredging, navigational aids and harbour security. It is expected to get a revenue share of at least 10 per cent. The cruise terminal, including the marina (for anchoring boats) would be located off Oyster Rock and complimentary facilities would be created at Oyster Rock and Nariman Point. The facilities at the cruise terminal would include a home port terminal offering a draft (depth) of 9.8 m; a port of call terminal with a draft of 11.5 m; baggage scanning; immigration and security check. The ICT would be operational for eight months and remain closed during monsoon, when the structures could be used for conferences and exhibitions.
