3i Infotech, an IT services provider, is planning to open 12,500 retail stores in rural areas in the next one year to offer basic services such as banking, insurance, mobile, education, utilities and ticketing at low prices.The company said it would invest about Rs 1-2 lakh per store and Rs 200 crore for the complete project. Each store would employ 1-3 employees and by the end of calendar 2009, 3i will totally employ about 25,000 people in the rural market under the venture. The company is in talks with at least three national and foreign banks for tie-ups and would earn commission per transaction.
3i Infotech will service nine states, including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Delhi. 3i would provide IT infrastructure like PCs, scanners, web cameras, photocopiers, telephones and other related infrastructure in the stores which will become operational from January, with the complete rollout eyed by 2009-end. The consumers will be charged Rs 5 per service and each household will be offered at least 5 services.
