Bird flu has again hit Malda district with barely 10 days to go for Christmas. The lab report came in from Bhopal on Monday. With the economy already hit by the slowdown, this may spell doom for the poultry industry. Reports of bird deaths are pouring in at an alarming rate, with villagers claiming 3,500 chickens have died in the Narhatta gram panchayat area alone. The district administration held a meeting with all the departments concerned. Culling begins on Wednesday and consumption of chicken will be restricted to the affected zone. A police parol will check removal of chickens to other parts of the district.
