Infrastructure and real estate development company MARG has been awarded the contract to develop and operate the greenfield airport at Bijapur in Karnataka. The Karnataka government has awarded the contract on a built-operate and transfer basis (BOT) under the public-private partnership model to MARG.Chennai-based MARG has won a 30-year deal to design, develop, operate and manage the airport.The airport will come up on 727 acres. According to government officials the cost of developing the airport is estimated to be more than Rs 100 crore.
There were 19 bidders in the race, including Reliance Infrastructure, Hindustan Construction Company, L&T, Bangalore-based engineering, construction and property development firm IDEB Projects and Coimbatore-based Super Airport Infrastructure.
In addition to terminal buildings, runways and control towers, MARG will also develop access facilities and build utilities necessary to serve the airport during the operational phase.GRK Reddy, chairman & managing director, MARG said, “MARG is happy to be a partner in developing a world class, greenfield airport at Bijapur, which will act as a magnificent gateway to exotic north Karnataka.” The Karnataka government has completed the land acquisition process.
However, Reddy declined to divulge investment details or the timeline for commencement of the project. The company has undertaken residential, commercial and special economic zone projects in Chennai.
The development of Bijapur airport is a part of Karnataka government’s effort to develop airports in its districts through the public-private partnership model. Bijapur, located about 530 km from Bangalore, boasts of heritage monuments such as Golgumbaz, Aihole, Pattadkal, Badami caves and Hampi. Similarly, Bangalore-based Jupiter Aviation led by Rajeev Chandrashekhar is also developing an airport at Hassan. Greenfield airports are also expected to come up in other districts such as Gulbarga and Shimoga.
