With Mumbai still coming to terms with the terror attacks, the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has made up its mind to start work for the first-ever Monorail project in the country. Senior officials of the authority said since the project has a stiff deadline, they are not waiting for any official bhoomipoojan ceremony. The bhoomipoojan for the first Monorail corridor between Jacob Circle-Wadala and Chembur was to be held on November 29. The ceremony was to be attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Gandhi Maidan in Chembur.
However, the function was postponed indefinitely due to the terror attacks. The state and MMRDA officials were in a difficult situation since there were speculations about the removal of the chief minister, who also heads the ministry of urban development.“The contractors for Monorail — L&T and Malaysia-based Scomi Engineering — have done all the ground work and they are waiting to start the actual work. The authority wants to finish of the project well within the 28-month period. That is the reason we have asked them to begin work,” said a senior MMRDA official, requesting anonymity.According to sources in the MMRDA, work has already started at the Wadala end of the project. When contacted, L&T officials confirmed that the work has been started. They, however, refused to reveal any further details.
