PMRDA snippets

The Maharashtra state cabinet sanctioned the formation of the Metropolitan Region Development Authority for Pune and Nagpur on the lines of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).While the Pune Metropolitan Planning Committee has already been formed, the cabinet's decision will now lead to the amendment of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, leading to the formation of the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). Chief minister Ashok Chavan, deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal and other cabinet members gave their approval for the formation of the Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MRDA) in the state. A government release said there was an urgent need for better coordination between municipal areas and the surrounding region for better planning, coordination and development of the area around municipal limits.
While Mumbai alone was covered under the MMRDA, the cabinet approval will now extend the MRDA for Pune and Nagpur. The state government had announced the formation of the PMRDA over a decade ago. The PMRDA would incorporate several municipal councils and corporations. These were Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Lonavla, Talegaon, Bhor, Shirur, Saswad, the three cantonments of Pune, Khadki and Dehu Road and some 100 fringe villages.
The PMRDA will expedite the implementation of the development plan for the region. The draft development plan for the region will now be prepared by the PMRDA and after the state's sanction. The lands will be handed over to the authority for development of water and drainage facilities. The authority will prepare the development plan in two parts. Land acquisition and development of public utilities will be undertaken in the first part, while financial issues will be dealt with in the second part.
