Pune and PCMC get buses too


Pune's public transportation is set to go places with the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) sanctioning 650 new buses for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations on Friday. The new buses will arrive by June, taking the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) fleet to 1,798 buses. According to a report by the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), the transport body needs 1,800 buses to provide effective service to the citizens. The JNNURM norms state that Pune will need 2,100 buses by 2011. Municipal commissioner Praveensingh Pardeshi said the urban renewal mission had sanctioned 500 buses for Pune and 150 buses for PCMC following a meeting on Friday in Delhi. Pardeshi said that the civic body received a sanction of Rs163 crore to purchase the new buses. The urban renewal mission cell's officer on special duty Pravin Ashtekar said that while PMC had submitted a proposal for 867 buses, 500 were sanctioned. The civic body will now submit a detailed project report through its consultants IL&FS to purchase the buses after a clearance from the urban development ministry.PMPML's chairman and managing director Nitin Khade saisd they will now concentrate maintenance and modernisation of depots.
