Signs of Revival : Domestic Aviation Feb ' 09

Domestic air travel has finally shown some revival sign after several months of double digit falls. Despite airlines sharply hiking fares in February over January, the month actually saw more people flying within the country. According to the aviation ministry, January — with its rock bottom fares — saw 33.26 lakh domestic flyers. And February, when fares had almost doubled, this figure has actually gone up to 33.36 lakh. On yearly basis, February 2009 over 2008 has seen a 8% fall in traffic — a single digit fall after several months of double digit losses. In another development, Vijay Mallya-led Kingfisher has consolidated itself as India’s single largest private airlines as Naresh Goyal’s Jet Airways along with the low-cost carrier JetLite are now number two in terms of domestic passenger carriage. Kingfisher carried over 9 lakh passengers this month as the Jet-JetLite combines saw about 8.5 lakh flyers.
