AMC to launch massive tree plantation drive

The Gujarat state forest department in co-ordination with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will take up a massive tree plantation drive as a part of the project “Greening Gujarat.” Principal secretary SK Nanda said that about 5 lakh saplings would be planted in area under the AMC and the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). This is the first time such a massive tree plantation drive would be taken up. Nanda said this would be an urban record. He said that during consultations with Chief Minister Narendra Modi it was agreed that a massive tree plantation would be launched through multi-sectoral participation, including that of NGOs. The forest department will hold a meeting with the non-government agencies, corporate bodies, industries, students and educationists besides others. On Friday, Nanda said, a meeting would be held to chalk out plans for making this programme a success. He said once the trees are planted, it would be the responsibility of the local NGO or the students to ensure their survival.
