Gujarat's Mission China



After attracting investments from Japan, it is ‘Mission China’ for Gujarat government. The state government is hoping for an impressive show by Chinese companies during 2013 Vibrant Gujarat business meet. The government on Sunday said that over 50 companies have already expressed interest in setting up manufacturing units here under joint ventures with local firms. “China’s budget for investment in India is $100 million dollars this year and we expect Gujarat to corner over 10% of this. Four local companies have already signed MoUs with Chinese entities,” said principal secretary, industries, Maheshwar Sahu. Sahu talked about possibilities of a Chinese township on the lines of the one for Japanese firms coming here. Sahu was addressing a press conference on Sunday along with other members of highprofile delegation that accompanied chief minister Narendra Modi to China on four-day visit last week. The 28-member delegation, including corporate honchos Parimal Nathwani, Pranav Adani and Sudhir Mehta, met 180 businessmen in Sichuan to boost trade ties between Gujarat and China. Among the companies that have entered into a joint venture was Kiri Industries. Managing director of Kiri Industries Manish Kiri said, “We have signed an MoU for technology transfer with an engineering institute run by Beijing Municipal Corporation. Beijing has a sound solid waste treatment facility and we aim to bring the technology to Gujarat.” Chinese transformer manufacturer Tebian Electric Apparatus Stock Co has also invested $400 million in the state. Sahu said that the company plans to expand its capacity. A delegation from China Rail Engineering is expected to assess the potential of high speed trains in Gujarat in the next few months. Huawei plant in Guj Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies plans to set up its Indian manufacturing base in the state along with an R&D centre focusing on e-governance. The company will focus on producing mobile devices and infrastructure equipment. At present, the company manufactures optical equipments with an outsourcing model. It will also look at options like setting up a data centre, developing a smart city project for Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar and develop database for the government in cloud. In an attempt woo firms from the Dragon land, Gujarati and Indian food festivals will be organized in Sichuan and similarly, Chinese food festivals will be hosted here. Gujarat government is exploring ways to get air connectivity with major Chinese cities. The state has already rolled out Mandarin language courses for travelagents and entrepreneurs. City-based India China Economic & Cultural Council has asked Sichaun-based Panzhihua Guanghua Group to send Mandarin teachers to Gujarat.
