Kolkata statz

Kolkata is close to becoming the single largest urban patch in the country and this will affect its ecological integrity and alter its climate, an IISc study has said.
The city has lost over a quarter of its green cover between 1980 and 2010, more than any metro. During this period, its urban sprawl has increased 4.3 times -from 72.66 sq km to 314.3 sq km, expanding 8 sq km every year. Its vegetation has declined from 33.6% to 7.36% in the last 30 years. The city is now the 13th most populous and eighth largest urban agglomeration in the world with a population of 14.11 million.
