Ahmedabad Metro on track

A decade after it was planned in 2003, the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project got Narendra Modi's push as the Cabinet approved Rs.10,773 crore for phase one, covering 35.96 km, on Saturday .
The first phase will cover two corridors: North-South will span 15.42 km from APMC, Vasna to Motera stadium, and East-West will cover 20.54 km from Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam, through the Walled City . To steer clear of protected monuments, the Metro will negotiate three curves underground, each of 120 degrees. The Centre will contribute Rs 1,990 crore in equity and subordinate debt.
“I thank the Prime Minister and Union government got ap proving the first phase... It will give a major boost to Mega City's development,“ CM Anandiben Patel tweeted. The special purpose vehicle, Metro-link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad Company implementing the project, will be a 50:50 company of the Centre and state government like the Delhi Metro.
The alignments will provide rapid connectivity and cover areas marred by traffic snarls. Ahmedabad is the seventh largest metropolis in India. Considering the population increase, augmenting the bus service will be inadequate for passengers who are opting for private transport.
“This will not only aggravate congestion but also increase pollution. Hence, a Metro system has become essential,“ a government release said.
