Modi in Maharashtra

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Mumbaikars to elect BJP to office in Maharashtra with an absolute majority for steady and smooth development. Elaborating on the theme of development, the PM, addressing a well-attended poll rally at the Mahalaxmi race course ground, said, “If you install a BJP government, I will be inspired to frame policies for the state's development as there will be better Centre-state ties.“I make a public promise that I will work for Maharashtra's speedy development and take every section of people along with me,“ he said amid chants of `Modi, Modi'. The PM spoke in his trademark style, interacting with the audience, hurling a few questions at the crowd.
“However, I will be able to do nothing if you elect those who don't want to share the dais with me. They will slam the gates on me. The federal structure of the country is such that I will be helpless if you choose another government,“ he cautioned.
Modi didn't refer to Shiv Sena even once, ignoring the 25-year-old Hindutva alliance which broke off recently . Observers say the PM tacitly referred to Sena when he spoke of `dada-giri' (coercion) in Mumbai and the need to free the city from the clutches of slumlords. “Mumbai is India's nerve centre. If Mumbai suffers losses, India too suffers losses. We are poised for economic development. Mumbai should be in the forefront in this mission.Mumbai will alter India's destiny,“ he said.
For the city, Modi promised rapid transport systems, 100% FDI in railways, houses for slum dwellers and the Navi Mumbai airport “during our term“. “If Mumbai and Maharashtra do not progress, India does not progress,“ he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on NCP president Sharad Pawar, but steered clear of taking on estranged ally Shiv Sena “out of respect for Balasaheb Thackeray”. “A shrewd politician like Pawar knew his ship was sinking. So, he chose not to contest the Lok Sabha election and entered Parliament through Rajya Sabha,“ he said at a rally in Kolhapur, a day after Pawar criticized him for abandoning prime ministerial duties to campaign in the state.
At Tasgaon in Sangli district, where NCP leader R R Patil is contesting, Modi said.“The assembly election is taking place for the first time in the absence of Balasaheb and I won't criticize Shiv Sena because of my respect for him.“ Addressing three rallies on the second day of his campaigning in poll-bound Maharashtra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unleashed a fusillade of criticism at NCP leader Sharad Pawar.
The PM said he was saddened by Pawar's anti-Gujarat campaigning. “Maharashtra is an elder brother to Gujarat. Pawar has sinned by evoking Shivaji Maharaj. I have installed a statue of Shivaji Maharaj in Surat which is greater than what Pawar has in Baramati. Sharadrao was chief minister and then Union agriculture minister. Had he drawn any inspiration from Shivaji Maharaj's work on water management, farmers of Maharashtra would not have commit suicide.“
Modi said Maharashtra has fallen from its top rank due to the 15-year `misrule' of NCP and Congress. “Do not be fooled by their different names. At heart they are the same, with one goal of looting the people... 3,700 farmers commit suicide year because they do not have water or electricity for the crops,“ he said in Gondia. Maharashtra's people don't want Yuti or Aghadi; they only want a BJP government, Modi added, while promising to transform the state if BJP is voted to power with a full majority.“After the assembly election, we may need a microscope to find leaders of Congress and NCP .“
In Kolhapur, the PM reached out to the public for answers and the crowd responded with chants of `Modi, Modi' several times during his 30-minute speech.“I was in the US when I heard that NCP and Congress leaders didn't want me to come to Maharashtra. I wondered why .I used to come to Maharashtra many times; what is their problem now. From Beed to Kolhapur, I am witnessing an ocean of crowd to hear me. This crowd is the worry of NCP and Congress.“
On Congress's demand for an account of his 100 days' work as PM, Modi said, “They were ruling for 60 years and are asking me for an account of the last 100 days. I am answerable to the people of India, to whom I will give an account of every minute and rupee. Modi has done nothing in 100 days, whatever has been done is by the 125 crore people of India.“
Modi did not speak about the effect of the BJP-Shiv Sena break-up on the election, but appealed to the voters to bring BJP to power with a record number of candidates. “I will not utter a single word against Shiv Sena out of respect for Bal Thackeray .... Some things are above politics.... There are feelings. Not everything should be linked to politics,“ Modi said.
