Akhilesh rides the Cycle

The Election Commission of India ruled in favour of the Akhilesh Yadav faction of the Samajwadi Party , saying that it was entitled to use the party name and `bicycle' symbol, dealing a blow to the faction led by SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav ahead of the assembly polls in UP .
The EC said the order was arrived at after applying “the test of majority support“ approved by the Supreme Court and applied thereafter by the commission in all disputes in recognised political parties in terms of Paragraph 15 of the Symbols Order.

As per documents and affidavits submitted by the Akhilesh Yadav camp to EC, 31 members of the National Executive out of 47 members, 195 members of the UP Legislative Assembly out of 229 members of the party in the assembly, 48 members of the UP Legislative Council out of 68, 4 members of Parliament out of 5 members in the Lok Sabha , 11 members of Parliament out of 19 members in the Rajya Sabha and 5,242 delegates have supported Akhilesh's leadership. The 42 page EC order noted that despite repeated reminders and opportunity given, the Mulayam faction did not present any document to prove its numerical strength.
