Ensure plastic flags are not used

The government advised states to ensure that national flags made of paper and not plastic were used by people during Republic Day celebrations, saying dignified disposal of plastic flags that were non-biodegradable and did not decompose for a long time, was a “practical problem”. In an advisory sent to states and Union Territories, the home ministry said the national flag represented the hopes and aspirations of the people and should occupy a position of honour. The ministry advised states to ensure that only flags made of paper were used at such occasions in accordance with provisions of the ‘Flag Code of India, 2002’. The advisory particularly warned against paper flags being discarded or thrown on the ground after the event.
