Five militants killed in Shopian encounter

The security forces killed five Hizbul Mujahiddin militants in an encounter in Shopian district of south Kashmir.

According to a police spokesperson, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Shopian police, 1 Rashtriya Rifles and 178 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force in Reban area of Shopian district following a specific input.

During the search operation, the hiding terrorists fired on the joint search party. The fire was retaliated, leading to an encounter, he said.

Five terrorists were killed, and their bodies have been retrieved from the the site of the encounter. The identification of the terrorists is being ascertained.

However as per credible sources, the terrorists belonged to the Hizbul Mujahiddin, and one of them is believed to be a top commander of the outfit.

Incriminating material, including arms and ammunition, were recovered from the site of the encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes.

“In this connection, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered in Zainapora police station, and an investigation has been initiated,” the J&K Police said in a statement.

The police said incase any family claims the slain militants to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identification.

Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure internet services have been suspended in Shopian and Kulgam districts of south Kashmir.
