France’s Areva to supply six nuclear reactors

Despite the global meltdown, global nuclear players are looking at more opportunities in India. While Russia is all set to sign an agreement with India for four more reactors at Kudankulam, French nuclear major Areva is all set to bring in about six European Pressurised Water Reactors to India by 2020.Areva proposes to supply at least six light water reactors (LWRs) to India by 2020 when the country’s nuclear capacity will rise to 20,000 MW from the present level of 4,120 MW. “Areva has already had talks with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and private players like Reliance Power, Tata Power, GMR and others for the supply of LWRs,” said Areva Group market manager Patrick Teyssier.
Meanwhile, NPCIL has decided to complete its nuclear capacity addition of 3,160 MW by 2011 and another 4,800 MW to be commissioned in the 12th Plan. “It has also proposed development of nuclear parks in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat,” NPCIL CMD SK Jain said.
