Delhi Metro III snippets

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has finally got Delhi government’s nod for preparing the detailed project report for Phase III, which will cover 85 km. The economic finance committee approval has been granted for Rs 3.19 crore, which Delhi government has to pay. So far, Delhi Metro lines have all been straight links. But in Phase III, there will be interlinks between the existing lines as the Metro will reach areas like Nizamuddin railway station, Vasant Kunj, Kalkaji, Sheikh Sarai, Malviya Nagar and Badli. Construction on Phase III is scheduled to start soon after completion of Phase II next year. Officials said now that the funds have been approved for DPR — the cost is being shared equally by Delhi government and ministry of urban development (MoUD) — DMRC will undertake preparation of DPRs for all the lines proposed in the Metro masterplan. The longest will be a 25-km link between Ghazipur and Dhaula Kuan, with stations at Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension, Sarai Kale Khan, Nizamuddin station, Moolchand, AIIMS, Bhikaji Kama Place and Dhaula Kuan. Another 23-km long line is proposed from the upcoming Metro station at Noida Sector 18, Kalkaji, Sheikh Sarai, Malviya Nagar, Vasant Kunj and National Highway-8. These lines will provide interchanges at the existing Line 3, being extended to Noida, and Line 2 which is going to Badarpur via Moolchand and Gurgaon via AIIMS. Another interlink Metro line is proposed between Central Secretariat and Kashmere Gate (7 km) with stops at Barakhamba Road and Delhi Gate. A similar 7-km link will come up from Ashok Park to New Delhi Railway station via Karol Bagh and Pahar Ganj. The Delhi Metro masterplan with a 2021 deadline envisages an integrated network spanning 381.11 km. Phase IV will add several semi-urban areas to the network adding another 76.3 km.
