Navi Mumbai Airport update

Villagers in Panvel taluka boycotted a government notified public hearing on the proposed Rs 9,000 crore Navi Mumbai Airport Project , over non-fulfilment of their pending demands. The protesting villagers waved black flags and banners at the authorities who had assembled at Pargaon village for the hearing. Raigad district collector Subhash Sonawane and senior officials of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) as well as City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (Cidco) were present for the public hearing. Sonawane accepted the villagers’ demand letter and assured them that he will forward it to the state government for action. A total of 17 villages in Panvel, Kamothe and Uran regions would be affected by the airport project. Relocations of over 15,000 villagers from 10 core villages is also in the plan. Of the total 2,054 hectares needed for the project, Cidco is already in possession of 1,154 hectares. The government is in the process of transferring its 443 hectares to Cidco. The remaining, informed Kulkarni, is private land that is being acquired. Cidco officials are hopeful that the final environmental clearance for the project would come in by August. The first phase of the project is expected to be complete by 2013 at a cost of Rs 4,900 crore. Final environmental clearance for the project expected by August 2010
